Welcome to Hej Coffee
HEJ COFFEE, pronounced ‘hey’, means ‘hello’ in Swedish. Our journey began in Sweden, took shape in Bermondsey, and now thrives in Elephant & Castle. Founders Jeremy and Mathew have worked for over 20 years in coffee, but it wasn't until Jeremy was on a coffee tour of Sweden that he found his coffee home. Inspired by the simplicity and efficiency of Scandi coffee culture, Jeremy loved how coffee worked as a social glue, bringing everyone together for the daily 'fika', or coffee-break ritual
Our Philosophy
We believe in the power of coffee to connect people. Our commitment to quality and community has been unwavering since our inception. We’ve embraced the Swedish tradition of black filter coffee, which reveals the true essence of the bean—its acidity, sweetness, and rich flavours. These principles of quality coffee and social good have stayed with Hej.
Our Practice
At Hej, we’re passionate about small batch roasting right in the heart of Elephant & Castle. Freshness is key to the perfect cup, and we ensure that by roasting our beans locally. Our space is a hub for all—a place where friends, neighbours, and visitors come together. Black filter coffee is often drunk in Sweden. This brewing method allows you to explore a broader range of flavours and can really experience the acidity and sweetness of the bean. It’s all about the coffee, and the roaster’s ability to highlight the bean’s potential.
Our Mission
Sustainability is at the core of Hej Coffee. We’re on a mission to become a net zero coffee roaster, and our Coffee for Causes initiative sparks conversations on vital issues like environmental conservation, disability rights, youth health, and LGBTQIA+ homelessness. We're bringing low-waste, ethical coffee into businesses and neighbourhoods across the UK and building lasting relationships along the way. Working out of Elephant & Castle, we roast specialty coffee, pack in reusable containers, and deliver by electric vehicles.

Our Journey
Hej Coffee was conceived in Sweden but born in Bermondsey. The founders Jeremy and Mathew had a brief 'marriage of convenience' with a large Swedish coffee conglomerate but quickly tired of the endless spreadsheets and wanted to get back to what they loved the most: serving great coffee and creating a community focused hub where everyone is welcome. So, they got divorced, kept the name, and followed their hearts.
Our Magic
HEJ is about small batch roasting because coffee tastes better when it is fresh. This is why we roast our beans right here in Elephant & Castle. The magic is happening right here, right now, in the midst of your community, amongst your friends and neighbours, and those of you dropping by from out of town… and that's all before the beans come anywhere near a grinder.
